Am I too old to start over?
You have wanted it for years. A different career, an instrument, a degree, or a language. But every time you consider it, the same thought appears: it is too late. You imagine being the oldest person in the room, surrounded by people who started at twenty, and it feels as though the door closed quietly while you were busy with other things.
An old man reading Greek
Cicero describes a conversation between Cato and two men. During their talk, Cato mentions a pursuit he began late in life:
“it was only when an old man that I became acquainted with Greek literature, which in fact I absorbed with such avidity”
— Cicero, On Old Age (De Senectute), § 8, tr. E. S. Shuckburgh
Cicero does not frame this as a moral lesson or a feat of will. He uses the word “avidity.” Cato describes his study as a yearning to quench a “long-continued thirst.” This is the language of hunger, not discipline.
Solon's boast
Cato also recalls Solon, the Athenian lawgiver. Solon held an unusual point of pride: he boasted in his poetry that he grew old “daily learning something new.” For Solon, the status of a beginner at an advanced age was not a weakness to hide. It was the boast itself.
What “too late” is often about
Seen through the lives of these two men, “late” changes meaning. The age of the student rarely affects the subject. Languages and crafts do not check IDs.
Often, the fear is not about the time lost, but about a specific image: being a novice who is clumsy and slow in front of people who are younger and faster. The shame of being seen as a beginner can feel heavier than the years on a calendar. This differs from the feeling that real life has not yet begun, which has its own page.
What would I want to learn if nobody could see me as a beginner?
