Epimelea

Terms of Use

This page explains how Epimelea works: what you get, what you pay for, what we cannot do for you, and what we ask of you. It is written in plain words, because you are the one who has to read it, not only a lawyer.

What Epimelea is

Epimelea is an app for psychological work that continues over time. The therapist here remembers your past meetings: the themes you keep returning to, what you decided a month ago, what took you a long time to say. Everything said stays yours for exactly as long as you want it to.

You stay anonymous, and the archive cannot be decrypted without you. We do not ask for your name, your email, or your phone number. We simply do not have them. Everything you write and say is encrypted on your device before it goes anywhere, with a key that neither we nor anyone else holds. Even if someone gained full access to our servers, they would find only data that nobody there can read. There is one exception, and we do not hide it: to answer you, the provider of the language model has to read the text of the meeting. How that works, and what we do about it, is set out in the privacy policy.

We take this seriously. The therapeutic side is built on recognised approaches to psychotherapy and developed from professional sources, not as a "supportive bot". Data protection is built on current encryption standards. The details are in the privacy policy.

This is not a medical service. The app does not diagnose, treat, or prescribe, and it does not replace a psychiatrist, a psychologist, or a physician. It is not emergency help. If you are in danger right now, call your local emergency number or a crisis line. The numbers for your country are in the app: in a reference section you can open at any moment, and in the conversation itself when it calls for them.

The therapist is a language model. It is named as one everywhere in the app, and it will say so if you ask. It can be wrong, and it can be wrong confidently. Decisions about your health, your medication, and your safety are yours and your doctor’s, not the model’s.

The service is not intended for people under 18.

What we have done for your safety

Talking about hard things calls for care. We treated that as an engineering task, not as a line in the rules.

Your account

There is no email address and no "reset password" button. Your account is a three-word archive name, a password you came up with, and a recovery code the app gave you. Your archive is encrypted on your device with a key we do not have.

The archive lives with us, not on your phone. The encrypted copy on our servers is the primary one; the device holds a working copy. The phone may drown, be lost or break, and you may buy a new one or move from iPhone to Android. You enter the archive name and the password, and the whole history is there, down to the last meeting. Several devices can be used at once. We still cannot read that copy: what we hold is ciphertext, and the key is derived from your password on your device.

If you lose both the password and the recovery code, the archive will be lost. We cannot open it or restore it: we do not hold the key, and there is no way around that. Please keep the recovery code somewhere safe, and export your archive from time to time. The app saves it as ordinary text files that open anywhere.

For the same reason, we cannot restore your access on the basis of an email: we do not know which archive belongs to whom, and we have no way of telling you apart from a stranger. For anything else, write to hello@epimelea.com. We will help.

What we ask of you

Every account has spending limits, and we watch for signs of abuse using anonymous figures. An account plainly not being used for therapy may be limited or closed. Even then we see only figures and costs, never the contents of your archive.

Payment

One subscription, everything included, billed monthly. No counters, no balance, no add-ons: the subscription sets only the date up to which meetings are available to you.

The first two meetings are free, and no card is needed. They are no more limited than the paid ones.

What payment covers. A subscription is what lets you start a new meeting. A meeting already under way is never interrupted: if the subscription ends mid-conversation, the conversation runs to its end and its record is kept.

The end of a subscription does not close your archive. Meeting records, the notebook, summaries, export and deletion stay available at all times, whether you are paying right now or not. A subscription is needed only for new meetings.

If a payment does not go through, meetings stay available for a few more days. The service is not cut off the same day.

Cancelling takes one step, in the app store or payment service you subscribed through. Access continues until the end of the period you have paid for. A refund or a disputed payment closes access immediately.

Payment goes through the App Store, Google Play, or Paddle. Refunds and cancellation have their own page: refunds and cancellation. Your archive name is not passed to the payment service: the purchase is marked with a one-time code that is linked to your archive only on our side.

An archive restored from an export does not receive the free meetings again. Everything else in it works as usual.

Availability of the service

We do not promise uninterrupted service. Models, vendors and prices change, and the app’s capabilities may change with them.

If Epimelea ever closes, your archive will outlive it: the files are yours, they are decrypted by your key on your device, and reading them does not require us. We will give notice of a closure in advance, in the only way available to us: in the app itself and on the site, because we do not have your email address.

Liability

We put everything we can into the quality of the work and the protection of your data. We are responsible for running the service as described here and in the privacy policy. We are not responsible for the decisions you make in your own life, for what a language model says, or for the loss of data whose keys only you hold. Where the law of your country gives you more rights than this text does, the law applies.

Changes

These terms may change. We will announce any significant change in the app itself and on the site. We cannot write to you, because we do not have your email address. The date of the last change is always shown at the top of this page.
