Why do I feel restless even though I have everything
The job is stable. Your relationships are fine. There is food in the fridge and no urgent deadlines on the calendar. Yet on a free Sunday, you find yourself pacing from room to room or opening apps you have already checked. Nothing is wrong, but you cannot settle.
It is easy to label this as ingratitude or a problem that needs a solution. A seventeenth-century poet saw it differently.
The glass of blessings
George Herbert was a country parson who died at thirty-nine. His poems were published in 1633 in a collection titled The Temple. In one poem, «The Pulley», he describes a scene where God creates man and keeps a glass of blessings nearby. He pours out strength, beauty, wisdom, honour, and pleasure. Then he stops. One thing remains at the bottom.
Perceiving that alone of all his treasure Rest in the bottome lay.
— George Herbert, «The Pulley», 1633
Everything else is given to the man. Rest stays in the glass.
Rich and weary
Herbert explains what happens when a person possesses every gift except that one.
Yet let him keep the rest, But keep them with repining restlesnesse: Let him be rich and wearie
— George Herbert, «The Pulley», 1633
The word «rest» serves two purposes here. It refers to the gift that was withheld and to «the rest», the sum of everything already granted. You may have the rest, but you do not have rest.
In this view, restlessness is not caused by a missing piece. It arrives with the gifts. Being «rich and wearie» is how a full life is constructed from the beginning.
Herbert suggests that this weariness exists to «tosse him to my breast». This is a parson's conclusion; it remains his.
Filling the gap
The poem leaves a question for the reader: if rest was never in the glass, what do we pour into that empty space?
For some it is another purchase, another plan, or another show started at midnight. Others use endless work or check their phones. These are not crimes. But each habit is placed where rest should be, and each wears off by evening.
Restlessness may not be asking to be filled. It may only want to be noticed.
When the house is full and I still cannot sit down, what do I reach for to put in the place of rest?
