Why do I need to hear that they love me?

Someone remembers how you take your coffee. They show up when it matters. The evidence is all there, and still you hang on at the end of a phone call, waiting for one particular sentence. When it doesn't come, the day feels hollow. You can't say why the silence weighs more than everything they did.

Shakespeare opens one of his darkest plays right here.

A king asks to be told

Lear is old and decides to split his kingdom among his three daughters. The land comes with a condition:

"Which of you shall we say doth love us most? That we our largest bounty may extend"

— William Shakespeare, King Lear, Act I, Scene I

Goneril says she loves him most. Regan says she loves him more. Each gets her share of land. Cordelia, the youngest, finds her love is heavier than her tongue. When her turn comes, she tells her father she has nothing to say.

When words become currency

Once Lear asks, love has a price. The daughters who love him least have the most to say. Cordelia loves him most and can't find a sentence big enough for it.

Lear isn't a fool for wanting to hear it. He is giving up his power and wants something solid in return. But words can't carry that kind of proof. The smoother the speech, the less it proves.

Love that goes unsaid has its own page. This one is for the person waiting to hear it.

What the scene leaves

Shakespeare doesn't give Lear a better question. He shows how fast asking for love turns into an auction. What remains is a question for you: what are the words you wait for supposed to prove?
