Why have I played it safe my whole life?

The job you stayed in. The city you didn't move to. The thing you meant to try and kept putting off. Each choice looked sensible on its own. Put together, they make a life where nothing was ever really risked.

Asking why can feel pointless. "I was scared" sounds like the whole answer. A very old story suggests it is only the second half.

Three servants

In the Gospel of Matthew a man goes on a journey and leaves his money with three servants. One gets five talents, one gets two, one gets one. The first two trade with theirs and double it. The third digs a hole and puts his talent in the ground.

When the master comes back, the third servant hands the money back untouched. He explains himself:

"Lord, I knew thee that thou art an hard man, reaping where thou hast not sown ... And I was afraid, and went and hid thy talent in the earth."

— The Gospel of Matthew 25:24–25, King James Version

The face comes first

Look at the order. He does not open with "I was afraid". He opens with a portrait: a hard man who takes what he did not earn. The fear comes after, and it follows from the portrait.

He carried that face with him the whole time his master was away. Every possible move was measured against it. Burying the talent was the only move that face could not punish. He never checked whether his master really was like that. He had already decided.

Whose face

A careful life is often an answer to someone. The actual risk may be small. What stops the step is a stern face that appears whenever one is considered. It can belong to a parent, a teacher, an early failure everyone saw. Sometimes it no longer belongs to anyone and stays anyway.

The sense of a life slipping by unused has its own page. This one asks about the judge, not the time.

What the story leaves

The parable gives no advice about risk. It leaves a question for anyone who has kept their talent buried: whose stern face do I see when I decide not to try?
